It was at Kargil during the war that I realized the far-reaching consequences of counterfeiting and fake drugs. Our wounded soldiers, injured while engaging the invaders, were now suffering due to the enemy within by consuming substandard drugs manufactured by the fly-by-night operators. Since then, many campaigns have been run to sensitise the government on the burning issue as also bring about the changes in the existing laws. That the problem has gained international proportions and magnitude can be viewed from the recently aired BBC sting operation where an established Indian pharma company was shown as willing to counterfeit and export any drug to make a quick buck.

On the fifteenth of July, after Nicholas Piramal’s senior president Harinder Sikka made his presentation to the Mashelkar Committee on the extent of the problem of spurious drugs (60 per cent of the Rs 4,000 crore trade is conducted out of Delhi’s Bhagirath Place in the walled city), a senior official from the drug controllers office rose to object.

Suresh Prabhu, NPIL to tackle spurious drugs menace

IN ORDER to create awareness and tackle the menace of spurious drugs effectively, the government has assigned former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu who would undertake massive programme in this direction along with Harinder Sikka, senior vice-president, Nicholas Piramal India Ltd (NPIL) and chairman CII Task Force, informed sources said.
